Altruism VS Egoism

interesting topic tat we learnt today at psychology.. altruism.. do you think true altruism exist? wat is your view?

taken from my psychology note:

Altruism: An unselfish interest in helping someone else
Egoism: Giving to another person to ensure reciprocity, to gain self-esteem, to present oneself as powerful, competent, or caring, or to avoid social self-censure for failing to live up to normative expectations

so when u donate for those flag day or you volunteer, or you offer your help, is it really altruism or is it egoism?

i admit, sometimes when i volunteer, is because of egoism..

but we are not saying altruism is better or egoism is better.. is just the fact of life.. not everyone is like Mother Theresa.. there is no good or bad about it.. just a point to ponder..
